From February 26 to March 1, 2024<\/strong>, students from the Master\u2019s programme in Physical Methods for Remote Sensing (Sorbonne University, IPGP, Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9), class of 2023, together with several students from the class of 2021 who are now pursuing PhDs, had the opportunity to take part in the second edition of the\u00a0Earth System Science Hub Workshop<\/a><\/em>. The event was held at the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN<\/strong>), one of the research centres of the European Space Agency (ESA<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in Frascati, near Rome, Italy, ESRIN is responsible within ESA for managing Earth observation activities, including the collection, storage and distribution of satellite data, as well as the maintenance of climate and environmental data archives. The centre also plays a role in coordinating more than 20 ground stations and overseeing ESA\u2019s small launcher programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of this five-day workshop was to train students in the use of Earth observation data to gain a better understanding of the dynamics and processes of the Earth system. Participants worked in groups of two or three and were asked to address a scientific and technical challenge defined at the beginning of the week, using various datasets provided by ESA\u2019s\u00a0Deep Earth System Data Laboratory<\/em>\u00a0(DeepESDL). At the end of the week, each group presented its analyses and conclusions in the form of a\u00a0storytelling<\/em>\u00a0presentation to the workshop organisers. Some of the projects were published on the interactive\u00a0Earth Observation Dashboard<\/em>, jointly developed by ESA, NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). This platform showcases concrete examples of how satellite data, combined with artificial intelligence, can be used to study environmental and climate-related phenomena on Earth:\u00a0https:\/\/www.eodashboard.org\/story?id=air-pollution-extremes<\/a> and https:\/\/eodashboard.org\/story?id=hunga-tonga-aerosols<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop also gave the students the opportunity to learn about current research activities carried out by ESA, through presentations delivered by various experts in the field of Earth observation. These included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Anja Str\u00f8mme<\/strong>, SWARM Mission Manager. SWARM is a constellation of three satellites (Alpha, Beta and Charlie) dedicated to measuring the Earth\u2019s magnetic field, providing a better understanding of the geodynamic processes occurring within the Earth\u2019s core.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Tommaso Parrinello<\/strong>, Aeolus Mission Manager. Aeolus carries a Doppler lidar instrument called Aladin, primarily used to measure atmospheric wind profiles and aerosols.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Florian Le Guillou<\/strong>, Internal Research Fellow, working on inversion methods to improve the representation of fine-scale ocean circulation, both spatially and temporally, using satellite observations such as sea surface height, sea surface temperature and ocean colour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    he visit concluded with a tour of the \u03a6-Experience (Phi-Experience<\/em>), an exhibition space dedicated to raising awareness of and showcasing satellite programmes and Earth observation applications through the use of interactive technologies.
